The long-awaited split release between two eclectic southern-Saskatchewan metal acts - Nachtterror and Altars of Grief - is now available to pre-order! Beginning with a Blackened Doom foundation, both Nachtterror and Altars of Grief branch from there and incorporate various other influences into their sound, including death-doom, symphonic black metal, and soundtracks music to create fresh and genuine music rooted in atmosphere and emotion! The album was recorded by Justin Bender (Third Ion / ex-Into Eternity)earlier this year at Blue Door Studio in Regina, SK. If the music itself wasn’t a reason enough to pick up this release, artist Sam Nelson has also drawn two amazing and distinct cover images for this release, presented in all its glory and detail on both sides of the record.
“Of Ash and Dying Light” is being release on a 10” record, and is strictly limited to 300 copies, only 100 of which will be available from the Hypnotic Dirge Webshop!! While supplies last, the record also comes with two 11cm x 7cm Nachtterror and Altars of Grief logo stickers!
Altars of Grief
Hailing from Regina, Saskatchewan, Altars of Grief was conceived in the frigid, winter months of 2013. The band draws from an eclectic musical background, weaving soaring choral arrangements with powerful, driving death metal; morose, gothic doom and frantic, uptempo black metal passages. In 2014, the band released its debut album, This Shameful Burden and followed up with a tour of central Canada in its support.
Altars of Grief's material on "Of Ash and Dying Light" is an incredible step for the band, delivering some of the best melancholic blackened doom in Canada and following in the footsteps of greats such as Woods of Ypres! Reflective, sombre, and personal lyrics and music drenched in atmosphere, this is definitely a band to watch that has arisen from the Central Prairie Plains!
lyrics
You lie, silent there before me
Your tears, they mean nothing to me
The wind howling at the window
The love you never gave
I give to you
Really don't deserve it
But now, there's nothing you can do
So sleep, in your only memory
Of me, my dearest mother
Here's a lullaby to close your eyes
It was always you that I despised
I don't feel enough for you to cry
Here's a lullaby to close your eyes
Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye
So insignificant, sleeping dormant deep inside of me
Are you hiding away, lost, under the sewers
Maybe flying high, in the clouds
Perhaps you're happy without me
So many seeds have been sown in the field
And who could sprout up so blessedly
If I had died I would have never felt sad at all
You will not hear me say 'I'm sorry'
Where is the light, wonder if it's weeping somewhere?
Here's a lullaby to close your eyes
It was always you that I despised
I don't feel enough for you to cry
Here's a lullaby to close your eyes
Here's a lullaby to close your eyes
It was always you that I despised
I don't feel enough for you to cry
Here's a lullaby to close your eyes
Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye
Here's a lullaby to close your eyes
It was always you that I despised
I don't feel enough for you to cry
Here's a lullaby to close your eyes
Here's a lullaby to close your eyes
It was always you that I despised
I don't feel enough for you to cry
Here's a lullaby to close your eyes
Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye

After listening to Ysyry Mollvün, listening to Downfall of Nur was urgent and turned out to be one of the best decisions I have made in quite some time: Umbras de Barbagia is simply magisterial; the atmosphere can hardly be compared to anything else. There is a deep, palpable connection to nature imbueing each very fibre of this record. The amalgamation of black metal and folk elements is done with a high intuition for detail and class, resulting in a highly immersive experience. Wonderful. David Fischer

PSA: if there was an album you heard a couple years ago and thought it was ok, listen to it again and you might love it.
That's what happened to me with this album. I cannot fathom why it didn't stick with me back then. Same thing happened with Decoherence's Unitarity for that matter. Matten
A blackened doom concept record about the very real problem of amphibian extinction, “Croak” is a punishing, essential listen. Bandcamp New & Notable Apr 23, 2022
