Metallurgical Fire Excellent progressive black metal. It truly is unique. There are loose comparisons I could make to other bands, but overall it’s an album with stunning variety, especially in the realm of vocal performance. Favorite track: Marcher Sur le Vide.

Maison Planàterre Le métal noir est habituellement une musique engourdissante, dépressive, lourde. Verlies y ajoute une touche de progressivité, de romantisme, de mélodique qui rend l'ensemble inédit. Les structures de rythmiques sonores sont imprévisibles, et leur choix tout à fait congruent. Conséquence, cette musique peut-être qualifiée de belle.

Based out of the French city Lille, Verlies is an avant-garde Black Metal band playing dark, strange, and experimental music. Without restrictions of conventional song structure, Verlies is all about creating dark and claustrophobic music with a strong emphasis on atmosphere. Ranging from piercing and uncompromising Black Metal, to experimental jazz melodies, to post-rock sensibilities, and everything in between, the music is raw, bold, and truly exceptional. Songs change pace and vibe frequently through their lengthy playing time, using many different techniques and methods to tell their story. Vocally, founding member N. mixes ferocious and tortured screams with enchanting and morose clean vocals that truly draw you in providing some uplifting moments alongside the raw hatred and despondency. Verlies’ debut album “Le Domaine des Hommes” is full of surprises but remains raw and never leaves the Black Metal vibe too far behind, instead using it as a base for their other sounds to draw from. Many bands these days try their hand at an unconventional approach to the Black Metal sound but only a few can pull it off genuinely and Verlies is one of those bands. Too often, the term “Black Metal Art” is thrown out haphazardly, but we humbly believe that it fits in this case!

Headed by founding member N., the project of Verlies started as a one-man project, but now has a full live lineup to spread their unconventional hatred throughout Northern France. Their debut album “Le Domaine des Hommes” was previously released digitally through their Bandcamp page, but now the album will get an official release in a noble and carefully designed 4 panel digipack, including a 12 page booklet and a bonus sticker while supplies last. The first cooperative release by Hypnotic Dirge Records and Throats Productions!

Mostly a one-man act (save for some guest studio performances) this full-length comes out of nowhere and creates one of the better atmospheric/progressive black metal records in some time. ... I can safely say this album was a major surprise. Not being familiar with the project before this, I was impressed from the first listen, and it grew on me more and more with each repeated spin. For fans of black metal, both traditional and with more of a progressive flair, this is an album that should be paid attention to. An incredible debut, and one that shows unlimited promise for the future of this act.

The atmosphere switches between menacing and melancholy, and never does anything feel forced or contrived. Verlies moves between a number of strange bedfellows, but everything clicks. There’s a rawness and emotive quality to the album, where you aren’t sure where it’s going to take you next but you want to be along for the ride. This is an album that is more than the sum of its influences and parts.

After listening to Ysyry Mollvün, listening to Downfall of Nur was urgent and turned out to be one of the best decisions I have made in quite some time: Umbras de Barbagia is simply magisterial; the atmosphere can hardly be compared to anything else. There is a deep, palpable connection to nature imbueing each very fibre of this record. The amalgamation of black metal and folk elements is done with a high intuition for detail and class, resulting in a highly immersive experience. Wonderful. David Fischer

PSA: if there was an album you heard a couple years ago and thought it was ok, listen to it again and you might love it. That's what happened to me with this album. I cannot fathom why it didn't stick with me back then. Same thing happened with Decoherence's Unitarity for that matter. Matten
